The Keffer Residence is Pike County, Pennsylvania’s first home to meet the Passive House standard. A roof-mounted PV solar system makes this home net zero capable.
This 2,900-square-foot weekend family retreat has been positioned to access free energy from the sun while enjoying views of a pristine mountain lake. The modern exterior blends seamlessly into the forested setting respecting its community’s standards for offsite views from the road and lake.
Filled with natural light, the home interiors feature polished concrete floors, modern furniture and mid-century light fixtures. An outdoor room connected to the house but outside the building’s Passive House envelope accommodates a beautiful Pennsylvania bluestone fireplace – a critical feature for the homeowners.
The foundation incorporates 8 inches of Pennsylvania perlite. The innovative application of this inexpensive, naturally occurring and light-weight rock replaced gravel. 18-inch-thick walls radically reduce heating and cooling loss and create a cozy, quiet living environment.
